Quartz Reef

Wines from Central Otogo legend Rudi Bauer

Austrian-born Rudi Bauer is one of New Zealand’s premier winemakers. He has been a force in New Zealand and international winegrowing for more than three decades. This Central Otago legend was the first to see the potential of the sub-region Bendigo.

While Central Otago may be most famous today for its dramatic scenery portrayed in the Lord of the Rings movies, Rudi is helping ensure it is equally famous for its sparkling wines and Pinot Noir.

Quartz Reef is known for intense, long-lived pinot noir and super-stylish sparkling wines. The wines are amongst the best of the region.

About Quartz Reef

Quartz Reef vineyard

Named after New Zealand's largest quartz deposit that lies beneath the vineyards at Bendigo Station, Quartz Reef has become the vessel for what winemaker Rudi Bauer calls. He wants to make wines which exhibit "a symphony of flavours" that "capture attention and entertain so that you forget everything else".

There are currently 30 hectares under cultivation. The key to this distinction lies in the maturing sun drenched slopes situated at Quartz Reef's Bendigo Estate vineyard. It is managed under the principles of Steiner.

Quartz Reef winemaker Rudi Bauer

Rudi Bauer was born in the district of Salzburg, Austria. Gaining degrees in viticulture and winemaking in Gumpoldskirchen (1975-79) and Krems (1980-82) in Austria and followed by winemaking business college in Bad Kreuznach (1983-84), Germany.

Rudi arrived in New Zealand in 1985. Over the next 11 years he worked for several New Zealand wineries as well as vintages in Oregon and Burgundy.

In 1989, he became Central Otago pioneer Rippon Vineyard's first certified winemaker. The pinot noirs he created there sparked a pinot-revolution and led to an increase of wineries in the region.

In 1990, Rudi made New Zealand’s first sparkling base wine in Central Otago. He was to first to see the huge potential that the sub-region of Bendigo offers for outstanding wines.

In 1996 Rudi Bauer finally established his own winery Quartz Reef.

Rudi won the first gold medal and the first trophy ever awarded to Central Otago wines. He also was awarded New Zealand Winemaker of the Year twice and was nominated Winemaker of the Year by the German Cuisine Magazine Der Feinschmecker as the first Kiwi ever.

The Quartz Reef wines

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate stated: "I doubt you will find a better non-vintage New Zealand sparkler."

Quartz Reef has a top reputation for its sparkling wines produced in the French Méthode traditionelle. About 3/4 of the whole production are sparkling wines.

Contender for ‘Winery of the Year 2018. “The method traditionnelle wines of Rudi Bauer are enough to qualify Quartz Reef in this illustrious group, the new Blanc de Blanc Vintage 2013 my best sparkling wine of the year, but this is supported by the other sparklings in the portfolio, plus great Pinot Noir.” – Raymond Chan
