About Paritua
Paritua vineyard is located in the heart of the Bridge Pa Triangle wine region in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The vineyard benefits from gravel soils, gentle contours, and an ideal climate with long summers and crisp winters. The name "Paritua" honors the Paritua Stream that flows through the vineyard, reflecting the connection to the land and people of New Zealand.
The name Paritua
The name Paritua is a tribute to the Paritua Stream, which meanders gently through the vineyard. Paritua means the meandering stream above the ancient river. The vineyard is planted over the historical riverbed of the nearby Ngaruroro River which flowed through pre the 1860s earthquake. It is a name that also acknowledges the connection with the land and the people of New Zealand.
The Paritua vineyard and wines
The vines were planted in 2003 and with 53 hectares planted. The soils are redmetal gravels, which contain large amounts of iron and manganese. Seventy percent is devoted to red varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec – with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay completing the picture. Paritua’s vineyard enjoys stony, free draining soils, long summers and crisp winters, which combine to produce exceptional quality grapes to craft the wines.
The flagship wine "21·12" is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend with Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It is only produced in the best vintages. It aims to be among the greatest Bordeaux Blends from New Zealand. The Stone Paddock selection of wines are made every year. They receive the same attention in vineyard and winery as Paritua premium label. Every bottle of Paritua wine comes from grapes grown on this special, single vineyard site. All Paritua wines are vegan friendly.
Paritua Winemaker
The chief winemaker of the winery is Jason Stent. He has been with Paritua for 14 years. Prior to this, he was the red winemaker at Sacred Hill. His passion is to create wines that respect the place and terroir where the vine grows. Jason grew up in Hawke’s Bay. At 20 years old Jason headed to France to race in the tough amateur road racing competition. He raced for a Bordeaux based club for two seasons. After a chance tasting of a 1961 Chateau Haut Brion Magnum, he decided wine was his future.
