A unique expression of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc: Barrel fermented, with a touch of Semillon and Sauvignon Gris, it is concentrated and complex. The wine is a homage to Bordeaux white wines, those of Graves and Pessac. The combination of Sauvignon Gris and Semillon with Sauvignon Blanc is usually not done in New Zealand.

Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Reviews

review Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2022Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: 96/100. Expressing precision and clarity, as well as power and complexity, the wine shows crunchy apple, mango, lemon pith and cedar characters on the nose with a hint of oatmeal nuance. The palate delivers terrific weight and persistency, wonderfully complemented by fine flow and saline texture, finishing with a great line and length. A stunning expression, destined to mature magnificently. At its best: 2026 to 2036.

review Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2022Huon Hooke (The Real Review): 96/100. Light, bright colour; intense nutty, spicy, balsamic bouquet with dried flowers and assorted spices galore, the palate tremendously intense and powerful, loaded with a myriad flavours and a multi-layered resonance that lingers ion and on. A profound wine that exists on a higher level than most sauvignon blanc. Drink 2024–2034.

review Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2022 Erin Larkin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 95+/100. On the nose, in its inchoate youth here, we see layers of lemongrass, tatami mat, white pineapple husk, green apple skins, white pepper, alyssum and star anise. In the mouth, the wine is balanced and harmonious already - this is crucial for us to understand how it could be such a composed wine in the future.

Tasting Note:

Radiating a mesmerizing white-gold hue adorned with shimmering green lights, Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2022 bursts with its signature perfume – vibrant concentrated nectarine, grapefruit and lime zest with lemongrass, guava and subtle toast notes. The attack broadens into ripe stone fruit and herbal seasoning, developing remarkable richness across the length of the palate. A balanced weight and crystalline acidity add to the immense fruit concentration and long savoury, saline finish. An embodiment of excellence.

Additional information

Type: White wine

Varietals: 88% Sauvignon Blanc, 7% Sauvignon Gris, 5% Semillion

Vineyards: Bullnose Vineyard and Woodthrope Terraces, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Most of the grapes are hand-picked in the company's relatively warm Bullnose Vineyard, inland from Hastings (the rest is grown at Woodthorpe, in the Dartmoor Valley), and the blend includes small proportions of Sémillon (to add longevity) and Sauvignon Gris (which contributes weight and mouthfeel). The fully ripe grapes for Cape Crest ’22 were hand harvested from individual plots within Te Mata Estate’s vineyards between 28 February and 13 March 2022. The vine age varies, but on average the vines are 20-25 years old. The oldest component is a parcel of Semillon from 1994 and Sauvignon Blanc from 1990.

Winemaking: The separate parcels were each destemmed and lightly crushed, then cooled before a brief period of skin contact. Following pressing and cold-settling, they were run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation. 50% of the barrels were Immersion barrels. These barrels are made of steam and hot water, so the inside is white and 'spongy' since they never touch fire. You get a lot of soft oak contact but no element of toast. The resulting wines were aged on lees, with regular stirring, for a further 11 months before bottling in February 2023.

The name: Cape Crest and its gannet symbol refer to Cape Kidnappers, the southern point of Hawke Bay, home to the world’s largest mainland colony of these remarkable marine birds.
