Reviews

review Escarpment NOIR Pinot Noir 2020Bob Campbell, MW (The Real Review): 93/100.  ... it is unfiltered with low sulphur additions to produce a fruit forward pinot noir with black cherry, plum, spice, dried herb and wood smoke flavours. Accessible now.

review Escarpment NOIR Pinot Noir 2020Cameron Douglas MS: 93/100.  Ripe and vibrant bouquet with a core of savoury dried herb laced dark cherry and plum fruits. On the palate - fruit centric with a savoury core, flavours of spicy plums and dark berries, chalky textured with some barrel-aged suggestions. Dry, lengthy, youthful, fresh and delicious. Great drinking from 2021 through 2025+.

review Escarpment NOIR Pinot Noir 2020Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: 93/100. Youthfully charming and beautifully fragrant, the wine shows dark cherry, floral, thyme and subtle mushroom characters, followed by a succulent palate that's plump and fruit expressive with an elegant spicy nuance. Harmonious and immediately appealing. At its best: now to 2026.

review Escarpment NOIR Pinot Noir 2020James Suckling (JamesSuckling.com): 91/100. Strawberry, orange-peel and orange-blossom aromas follow through to a medium body with a lovely core of fruit, bright acidity and savory character. Delicious finish. Drink now. Screw cap.

Additional information

Type: red wine

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Vineyards: Martinborough, New Zealand. The deep, lean, free-draining gravels of Martinborough, high wind run, low rainfall and exposure to the southern ocean means average pinot noir yields here are the lowest in the country. These factors, along with the significant age of the vines, contribute to the consistency of quality year after year and to the unique and distinctive sense of place.

Winemaking: 100% Martinborough hand harvested fruit has been open top fermented. After a total vat time of 16 days the wine was pressed off and barrel aged for 11 months. Bottled without filtration. Structure and texture sit perfectly with ripe fruit flavours and gentle tannins that combine with intriguing complexity.

Cellaring potential: 2025+

Alcohol: 13.5% vol

Residual sugar: <1 g/l

Bottle size: 0.75l

Notice: contains sulfite

Closure: Screwcap

Serving: Serve Pinot Noir at 16 - 18°C, that is slightly cooler than a typical room temperature, to best enjoy the layers of aroma and flavour as the wine slowly warms in the glass.

Produced and bottled: Escarpment Winery Ltd., 275 Te Muna Rd., Martinborough, New Zealand
