Reviews
Cameron Douglas MS: 96/100. Distinctive earthy mineral qualities then red berry fruits followed by a powerful core scent of hard clay and tilled soil combinations then scents of dried herb and barrel. Red fruit flavours along with a coarse silk texture touch the palate first then cherry and barrel spices, baking spices suggesting cinnamon and vanilla then a touch of clove. Dry with fine needle point tannins, medium+ acid line and a lengthy complex finish. A wine to cellar and consider tasting again from 2024 through 2034+.
Bob Campbell, MW (The Real Review): 96/100. From 33-year-old vines that promote density and consistency. A bright, vibrant wine with black-fleshed plum, cherry, raspberry and five-spice with an appealing savoury and fresh herb edge.
James Suckling (JamesSuckling.com): 95/100. A tightly-wound, stemmy and savory pinot with aromas of moss, charred bark, grilled herbs, spiced cherries, balsamic and rosemary stems. There's lots of tension here with tight, firm tannins providing a firm yet fine and subtle backbone. Beautiful structure and focus. Drink from 2023.
Tasting Note
The Kiwa vineyard tends to exhibit a complex array of red fruits such as raspberry, sour red cherry and red currant amidst perfumed notes of Chinese five spice and bacon. Savoury complexity adds to the attractiveness with bay leaf and Chinese black tea. The palate has firm tannins that tighten the structure giving one confidence to cellar for at least 10 years.
