About Pinot Noir from New Zealand
Intense, expressive, fruit-driven. Native to Burgundy and a diva in the vineyard, the Pinot Noir grape has found a home away from home in New Zealand. Pinot Noir produces deliciously smooth and elegant wines with ripe, silky tannins and an abundance of flavours.
New Zealand Pinot Noir regions
Pinot Noir is predominantly grown in the cooler southerly regions: Wairarapa, Marlborough, Nelson, North Canterbury and Central Otago.
Regional Pinot Noir wine styles
Marlborough: Marlborough is the biggest producer of Pinot Noir in New Zealand.
- Typical aroma: Red fruit (raspberry, cherry).
- Freshness from subtle acidity
- Linear structure and even tannin backbone.
- The Southern Valleys tend to produce fuller-bodied wines.
Central Otago: Second-largest Pinot Noir producer and well-known for high quality wines. The different subregions show differences.
- Gibbston Valley, Wanaka: tend to make cooler, edgier wines with red cherry, fresh herb, spice and often a pronounced mineral character.
- The warmer Bannockburn, Bendigo, Cromwell Basin and Lowburn areas: fuller, more tannic wines with cherries and dark fruit.
- Alexandra: Undertones of dried thyme.
Wairarapa: Darker fruit aromas, often with a savoury component. Rich, full, sweet fruit on the entry with flavours in the dark plum and chocolate spectrum. The structure of the wine is based around long, fine tannins.
North Canterbury: Red and dark berry fruit with spicy notes. Firm structure and acidity. Savoury earthy characteristics.
New Zealand Pinot Noir and food
Pinot Noir is easy to please when it comes to pairing with food. It is light enough for salmon or chicken, but complex enough to complement richer red or game meats and mushroom dishes.
Try it alongside game birds such as
- quail
- turkey
- duck
- pork
- veal
- lamb
- venison
Sauces with Garlic, tomato and cream will serve well. When everyone orders a vastly different meal while dining, Pinot Noir will probably make everyone happy.
For the best New Zealand Pinot Noir experience, age for 2-5 years and serve at 15°C. We recommend a large round bell-shaped glass. It is perfect to serve Pinot Noir, as it collects the delicate aromas of the wine.
International praises for New Zealand Pinot Noir
- "A global tasting proves New Zealand Pinot Noir is the world’s best value." - Katie Kelly Bell, Forbes (USA), July 2013
- "I took part in an extraordinary blind tasting here of Pinot Noirs from four continents, and the good news for everybody (except maybe the Burgundians) is that New Zealand’s lot surpassed most of the other wines on offer." - James Conaway, National Geographic Intelligent Travel (USA), December 2013
- "I love New Zealand Pinot Noir. When I was beginning my journey into wine, back in the early 1990s, it was a Kiwi Pinot that first switched me on to this wonderful variety. I was hooked by the heartbreak grape." - Wine critic Dr. Jamie Goode
